Maintaining a sufficient food supply is a fundamental human right. In order to promote international cooperation in the grain trade, create more open, fair, and stable markets, and improve global food security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) assists with the participation of Taiwan's Council of Agriculture (COA) in International Grains Council (IGC) meetings, which bring governments and traders from around the globe together to discuss markets and trade policy.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic had not abated, the IGC still managed to hold its 52nd Council Session as a videoconference on January 22, 2021, welcoming Taiwan's participation in sessions ad-dressing such topics as the five-year baseline projections of supply and demand of wheat, maize, rice, and soybeans. A forum was also held on January 21 entitled “Digitization: Trade facilitation tool for the grains sector.” MOFA coordinated with the COA to help its staff at the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) register to participate. AFA officials observed meetings and discussions on January 21 and 22.
