Vice foreign minister-level officials of the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea held a dialogue in Washington, DC, on May 31. The joint statement released by the US Department of State after the trilateral meeting reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity in the international community, called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, and strongly opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the waters of the Indo-Pacific.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sincerely welcomes the fact that the US, Japan, and the ROK, following their summit meeting last August, have again publicly underlined their support for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and reasserted their firm positions against unilateral changes to the regional status quo.
China has recently exerted military pressure and made intimidating remarks by using the normal and routine democratic process of a democracy as a pretext. This threatening activity has posed a major challenge to regional security and the rules-based international order, raising serious concerns in the international community. MOFA welcomes the continued attention on cross-strait security and stability by the world at large. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to coordinate with the US, Japan, the ROK, and other like-minded partners to advance regional peace, stability, and prosperity and strive to make further contributions to global development issues.
