Following a meeting on May 29, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi issued a joint statement on deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership, in which it was falsely claimed that Taiwan is an integral part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) strongly refutes this fallacious claim.
MOFA reiterates that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the PRC is subordinate to the other and that the Chinese communist regime has never governed Taiwan. These are internationally recognized facts. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) proactively defends its democratic system and respects human rights and the rule of law. It will not yield to coercion from China. The fact that Taiwan is a sovereign country will not change because of China’s claims.
MOFA calls on China to respond positively to the goodwill expressed by Taiwan toward preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and stop demeaning and suppressing Taiwan in the international arena. China should choose dialogue over confrontation and exchange over containment and join in the pursuit of regional stability and global peace and prosperity.
