In a recent interview with Tavuli News, Prime Minister of Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare erroneously cited United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 to falsely claim that Taiwan is a part of China.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) solemnly states that UNGA Resolution 2758 addresses only China’s right of representation in the United Nations and makes no reference to Taiwan in its entire text. The resolution neither authorizes the People’s Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the UN system nor calls Taiwan a part of the PRC. Furthermore, it does not make a determination on the status of Taiwan, does not preclude countries from having diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and does not preclude Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system. MOFA strongly denounces and condemns Solomon Islands for willingly serving as a pawn for China and following Beijing’s distorted and politically motivated misinterpretation of UNGA Resolution 2758.
MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a free and democratic country. Neither democratic Taiwan nor autocratic China is subordinate to the other. This is an internationally recognized, long-standing, and objective fact, as well as the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. The PRC has never governed Taiwan, and Taiwan is not a part of the PRC. Only the democratically elected government of Taiwan has the right to represent the 23.5 million Taiwanese people in the UN system and international arena. Neither China nor its followers have the right to claim otherwise.
