Prior to the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war on February 24, Belarus and Russia conducted several joint military exercises designed to intimidate Ukraine. Belarus even gave Russia permission to station troops on its border with Ukraine, increasing military pressure on the country. At the same time, Belarus has provided logistical support to the Russian army. The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses deep regret that Belarus has supported Russia’s violation of the territorial integrity of another sovereign nation and strongly condemns Belarus for undermining peace, stability, and the rules-based international order.
In consideration of Belarus’s support of the Russian invasion and in response to appeals from the international community, the R.O.C. (Taiwan) government announces that it will impose economic sanctions on Belarus starting today (May 6), adding a list of high-tech commodities for Belarus that are subject to the same export controls imposed on Russia. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) government once again expresses its firm opposition to any unilateral change to the status quo by force or coercion and reiterates its strong support for the rules-based international order. Taiwan will continue to coordinate closely with other like-minded countries and work together with the democratic community to make every effort to restore peace and stability to Ukraine and safeguard international justice, democracy, and freedom.
Other members of the democratic community, including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan, have also condemned Belarus for supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and have announced numerous rounds of economic sanctions and export controls on Belarus.
