The Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Defense (CREDN) of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil adopted a motion (19/2024) on April 24 extending condolences after Taiwan was struck by an earthquake. The motion was proposed by Deputy Rodrigo Valadares, a member of the Chamber of Deputies’ Taiwan Friendship Group. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomes and appreciates the passage of this motion.
On April 24, the Chamber of Deputies issued a press release stating that the CREDN had adopted a motion expressing the Brazilian National Congress’s concern over the most powerful earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years. During the committee meeting, Deputy Valadares provided details on Taiwan’s earthquake disaster and expressed his sympathies. He emphasized that Taiwan was Brazil’s 18th-largest trading partner and called for the two countries to further deepen bilateral economic, trade, cultural, and other forms of exchanges.
Immediately following the earthquake, Taiwan Friendship Group Chairperson Geraldo Junio do Amaral posted a message on social media platform X to express concern. He also donated NT$320,000 on behalf of the group via the Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief bank account set up by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to assist with Taiwan’s reconstruction efforts.
MOFA again expresses sincere appreciation for the warm condolences and support demonstrated by the Brazilian National Congress to Taiwan. Taiwan and Brazil share the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. It is hoped that the goodwill between Taiwan and Brazil will continue to grow and spread, laying a solid foundation for mutual assistance and cooperation in the international community. (E)
