During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on April 22, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that Cambodia opposed any attempt to use the Taiwan question to interfere in China’s internal affairs, opposed any form of Taiwanese independence, and firmly supported all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) solemnly reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign country, that neither the R.O.C. (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other, and that these are internationally recognized facts and represent the status quo. MOFA strongly protests and condemns the Chinese government’s repeated use of international events to unilaterally declare that Taiwan is an internal issue and to undermine Taiwan’s sovereign status.

Taiwan elected a new government through a democratic process early this year and will soon hold its presidential and vice presidential inauguration ceremony. Meanwhile, China has repeatedly and unscrupulously pressured other countries to defer to its false narratives aimed at diminishing Taiwan’s sovereignty. Taiwan will absolutely not bow to pressure or coercion by the authoritarian Chinese government. Rather, it will staunchly uphold the values of freedom and democracy, work proactively with like-minded nations to deter authoritarian expansionism, and do its utmost to ensure regional peace and stability.
