US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a summit in Washington, DC, on April 10. Following the meeting, they issued a joint statement reiterating the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of global security and prosperity. The fact sheet released after the summit highlighted Taiwan’s contributions to the development of Pacific island nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) greatly welcomes these statements and thanks the leaders of the United States and Japan for continuing to publicly affirm in numerous bilateral and multilateral fora the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and for recognizing Taiwan’s contributions to regional development.
China’s ongoing military expansionism and gray-zone provocations pose serious challenges to the region. The joint statement once again demonstrates that a high degree of international consensus exists regarding the importance of cross-strait peace and stability. MOFA welcomes the world’s continued attention to this matter. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will keep working with the United States, Japan, and other like-minded partners to promote regional peace, stability, and prosperity, as well as further contributing to international development.
