The United States Department of State on February 29 issued a press readout on a phone call between US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office Thomas Bagger, during which they discussed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. This marked yet another important public release of information that high-level US officials are bringing together like-minded partners in supporting the status quo of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. It followed a joint statement by the United States and the European Union reaffirming the importance of preserving cross-strait peace and stability, as well as talks among the US state secretary and the foreign ministers of Japan and the Republic of Korea on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting on the same topic, both of which occurred in February.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) sincerely welcomes and appreciates such continued support.
China has recently engaged in gray-zone activity with the aim to disrupt the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, such as by unilaterally rescinding the cross-strait agreement on the M503 flight route and taking provocative actions in the waters near Kinmen County. This poses a formidable challenge to regional security, causing a high level of international concern. MOFA appreciates the continued attention shown by all sectors to security across the Taiwan Strait. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will keep working closely with the United States, European nations, and like-minded partners in the Indo-Pacific to jointly safeguard the rules-based international order and ensure peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the region.
