MOFA response to North Korea’s test-firing of another ballistic missile on early morning of October 4

October 4, 2022

North Korea test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on the morning of October 4. This was its fifth missile test in 10 days. The United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea have condemned North Korea for repeatedly conducting such tests. The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses grave concern and strongly condemns North Korea for its irresponsible actions in once again contravening related prohibitions by the United Nations Security Council and undermining regional peace and stability.

The missile launched by North Korea today passed over Japanese territory, prompting Japan to issue a warning for residents to seek shelter. Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu conveyed Taiwan’s resolute support for the people and government of Japan to Chief Representative Hiroyasu Izumi of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, Taipei Office. He also expressed firm opposition to North Korea using military provocations to threaten the rules-based international order and regional peace and stability.

As a member of the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan will continue to closely monitor related developments and deepen cooperation in all domains with like-minded countries so as to push North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons and to advance peace and stability in the region. Taiwan will work with the international community to curb totalitarian expansion and aggression and thereby safeguard a free and open Indo-Pacific.
