Following parliamentary elections on November 20 last year, the newly elected parliament of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a diplomatic ally of the Republic of China (Taiwan), convened its 45th regular session on the morning of January 2, with its 33 senators taking their oaths of office. The senators then elected from among themselves former President Hilda C. Heine as the new president of the Marshall Islands.
R.O.C. (Taiwan) Ambassador to the Marshall Islands Steve C. C. Hsia promptly expressed heartfelt felicitations to President Heine on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan and forwarded a congratulatory message from President Tsai Ing-wen. Taiwan will later dispatch a delegation led by a presidential special envoy to the Marshall Islands to congratulate President Heine and her new cabinet.
The government of Taiwan applauds the people of the Marshall Islands for upholding the democratic system through concrete action and for completing national elections through an open, transparent, and peaceful democratic process. This has demonstrated their commitment to the core values of democracy, freedom, and equality. As a staunch ally, the R.O.C. (Taiwan) will continue to work hand in hand with the Marshall Islands in such domains as food security, medicine and healthcare, basic infrastructure, climate change adaptation, and women’s empowerment, deepening the bilateral partnership and jointly safeguarding peace, stability, and prosperity in the Pacific region.
