No. 425
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Montreal was officially opened and commenced operations on December 4. An inaugural reception was jointly hosted that morning by Ambassador Harry H. J. Tseng, Representative of TECO in Canada, and Rita Chen, Director General of TECO in Montreal. A number of prominent political figures attended the event to offer their congratulations, including Member of Parliament Judy Sgro, Chair of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu delivered remarks at the event via a prerecorded video. In his speech, he noted that Taiwan and Canada shared the values of democracy and freedom and stated that the establishment of the new mission in Montreal represented Taiwan’s hopes of comprehensively deepening its partnership with Canada in various domains, including trade, investment, science, technology, culture, education, indigenous affairs, public health, and medicine. Minister Wu also anticipated that the office would serve as a bridge to connect the people of Taiwan and Québec.
The Montreal office is located in Québec Province and is Taiwan’s fourth overseas mission in Canada. It will provide services to businesspeople, tourists, and overseas Taiwanese, as well as emergency assistance to Taiwanese nationals, in the provinces of Québec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, and the territory of Nunavut. It will also be responsible for promoting Taiwan’s participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization. TECO in Montreal will work in close coordination with TECO in Canada to advance wide-ranging and substantive cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and Canada.
