The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses concern over increasing military tensions between Russia and Ukraine on Ukraine’s eastern border

January 27, 2022

The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) urges all parties to respect Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Rejecting any unilateral changes to the status quo, it asks related countries to resolve differences and conflicts through peaceful and rational dialogue. Taiwan opposes the use of military force or hybrid threats to disrupt the status quo and security and stability.

Having long faced military threats from China, Taiwan is profoundly aware that the escalation of tensions during a standoff may trigger conflict, leading to heavy loss of life and property. Taiwan solemnly urges the international community to actively mediate between the relevant parties through diplomatic channels based on the principles of international law, so as to reduce tensions and jointly strive to maintain regional peace and stability in accordance with the rules-based international order that the world has long upheld.
