Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited China from June 4 to 8. The joint statement released by China and Pakistan during his visit states that “the authority of the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 brooks no dispute or challenge,” added that, “Pakistan reaffirmed its firm commitment to the one China principle and reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China’s territory.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns these absurd and false claims and solemnly refutes the statement’s distortion of the current international situation.
MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a free and democratic country and that neither democratic Taiwan nor authoritarian China is subordinate to the other. These are recognized internationally as objective facts as well as the cross-strait status quo. UNGA Resolution 2758 only determines China’s representation in the United Nations. There is no mention of Taiwan in the text. The resolution neither authorizes the People’s Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the UN system nor states that Taiwan is part of the PRC. China continues to tout its calculated and politically motivated misrepresentation of a historical UNGA document and spuriously conflate the resolution with its “one China principle,” for which there is no international consensus. MOFA condemns and protests this deceitful and deliberate attempt by the PRC and Pakistan to undermine Taiwan’s sovereign status.
China’s political coercion and diplomatic suppression will not shake Taiwan’s commitment to democracy. Taiwan is an important bastion in defense of the democratic and free world system. Moving forward, Taiwan will continue to strengthen cooperation with like-minded partners to jointly resist communist China’s rhetorical and military threats, curb authoritarian expansionism, maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and promote global economic security, prosperity, and development.
