No. 001

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) issues the following solemn statement:

On December 10, 2021, the Republic of Nicaragua unilaterally terminated diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Taiwan government deeply regrets this decision. To safeguard national sovereignty and dignity, Taiwan has decided to terminate diplomatic relations with Nicaragua with immediate effect, end all bilateral cooperation projects and aid programs, and recall staff of its Embassy and Technical Mission in Nicaragua.

Taiwan has always been a sincere and reliable friend to Nicaragua and has long worked with Nicaragua to improve the livelihoods of its people and assist with its national development. The outcomes of these efforts and Taiwan’s contributions are evident to all. Taiwan deeply regrets that the Ortega government has decided to disregard the long-standing and close friendship between the people of Taiwan and Nicaragua.

As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan has the right to conduct exchanges and develop diplomatic relations with other nations. The Taiwan government will continue to promote steadfast diplomacy to expand Taiwan’s international participation. It will spare no effort in upholding regional peace and stability, ensuring its rightful status in the international community, safeguarding national interests, and protecting the Taiwanese people’s well-being.
