MOFA response to ROK President Yoon restressing importance of cross-strait peace and stability in interview with Telegraph newspaper

November 21, 2023

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea has again stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait in an interview with the UK newspaper the Telegraph published on November 19. MOFA sincerely welcomes and appreciates his statement.

In addition to underlining the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and a rules-based maritime order in the South China Sea, President Yoon in the interview also discussed other issues of global concern, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas conflict, North Korea-Russia military cooperation, pandemics, and climate change.

Since assuming office in May 2022, President Yoon has reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait in joint statements following summits with the United States, the European Union, and Japan, as well as through media interviews. Taiwan is willing to cooperate closely with the Republic of Korea and all like-minded countries to jointly ensure peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait, on the Korean Peninsula, and in the Indo-Pacific region.
