MOFA response to joint statement by G7 foreign ministers reaffirming importance of peace and stability across Taiwan Strait

November 8, 2023

On November 7 and 8, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) met in Tokyo. Following their meeting, they issued a joint statement, reaffirming the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as indispensable to security and prosperity in the international community and calling for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. They also indicated support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) welcomes the statement and appreciates that the G7 member states have followed up on their strong statement of support for Taiwan and concern for cross-strait peace released after the G7 summit in May.

In recent years, China has used many pretexts to escalate its attempts to threaten and militarily intimidate Taiwan. This has posed a serious challenge to cross-strait and regional security and has caused the international community to be on high alert. This year, joint communiqués or statements issued at bilateral or multilateral meetings such as the G7 summit, the US-Japan summit, and the US-Japan-ROK summit at Camp David have all underscored the importance of cross-strait peace and stability. This demonstrates that cross-strait security has become a major concern of the international community.

As a responsible, important nation in the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to work with G7 member states and other like-minded countries to defend the rules-based international order and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific as well as global peace, stability, and prosperity.
