MOFA response to completion of Taiwan-Canada negotiations on foreign investment promotion and protection arrangement

October 24, 2023

Taiwan and Canada have completed negotiations on a bilateral foreign investment promotion and protection arrangement (FIPA). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) affirms and welcomes this important development in bilateral relations.

Canada announced its intention to strengthen economic and trade engagement with Taiwan in its Indo-Pacific Strategy last November. Less than a year later, the two countries have completed negotiations on the FIPA. This highly significant development will facilitate trade exchanges and promote bilateral investment, underscoring the further deepening of the economic partnership between the two countries. MOFA will continue to actively coordinate with the Executive Yuan’s Office of Trade Negotiations to complete the signing process. It looks forward to Taiwan and Canada increasing two-way trade and investment, establishing more resilient supply chains, jointly supporting the rules-based international economic order, and advancing peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
