MOFA response to false claims made in joint statement between PRC and Thailand regarding Taiwan

October 20, 2023

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 19. After the meeting, the two sides issued the Joint Press Communiqué between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, falsely claiming that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China” and noting that the Thai side also “supports China’s ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle.” These statements seriously deviate from the facts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) strongly protests and condemns the repeated attempts of the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party regime to undermine the sovereignty of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country and that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. This is an indisputable fact. No distortive narrative of Taiwan’s sovereignty by the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party regime can change the internationally recognized status quo.

MOFA urges the new government of Thailand not to defer to China’s malicious attempts to disparage Taiwan’s sovereignty and, instead, to work pragmatically and openly with Taiwan on the existing foundation of cooperation to further expand bilateral economic and trade exchange and contribute to regional peace and stability.
