The Defense of Japan 2023 white paper released by Japan on July 28 underlines the importance of stability across the Taiwan Strait to Japan’s national security and the stability of the international community. The white paper notes that China has continuously intensified military activities around Taiwan, which has become a matter of serious concern for Japan and the international community. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses appreciation for these statements.
The new white paper also notes the significant increase in the number of Chinese aircraft entering airspace around Taiwan and China’s attempts to create faits accomplis by escalating military activities around Taiwan. It further states that China’s actions present an unprecedented and grave strategic challenge to Japan.
Taiwan holds a pivotal position in the first island chain and plays an indispensable role in the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region. MOFA welcomes the continued concern of the international community for cross-strait security. Taiwan will also continue to closely cooperate with Japan and all like-minded partners to jointly defend the common values of freedom and democracy, so as to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the region.
