MOFA response to launch of official talks on Taiwan-UK Enhanced Trade Partnership

July 26, 2023

Minister without Portfolio and Trade Representative Deng Chen-chung and UK Minister for International Trade Nigel Huddleston reached an agreement in a videoconference on July 26 to launch official talks on an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) between Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

A Taiwan-UK ETP will strengthen cooperation in areas such as investment, energy, net-zero emissions, and digital trade, bolstering the economic security of both countries. It is also an important milestone in Taiwan’s efforts to work with like-minded partners in creating a free and open Indo-Pacific and achieving stable economic development for the region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely welcomes and appreciates this development.

Taiwan and the United Kingdom enjoy close trade relations. The United Kingdom is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner in Europe and its second biggest source of European investment. The ETP marks yet another important landmark in the development of the Taiwan-UK trade relationship. MOFA will continue to cooperate with the Executive Yuan’s Office of Trade Negotiations and closely work with the UK government and parliament to jointly deepen bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
