MOFA response to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson’s comments on sanctions against Taiwanese firms as well as TaiwanICDF and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy

July 14, 2023

The communist government of China has continued its arbitrary and malicious sanctioning of individuals, organizations, and enterprises of Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and the European Union. It has also used economic coercion as a trade weapon against countries such as Australia and Lithuania, eliciting international indignation and calls for Beijing to change its course.

Moreover, Beijing recently made revisions to its anti-espionage law, which came into force on July 1. The new act has ramped up the chilling effect on foreign companies, institutions, and individuals. It is clear that China intends to entrap nations, organizations, and individuals so that it can coerce, intimidate, or retaliate against them. China’s malevolent intentions and acts are unacceptable to civilized nations.

The objectives of the International Development and Cooperation Fund (TaiwanICDF) are to assist partner or developing countries in promoting economic, social, and human resources development so as to improve Taiwan’s economic ties with such nations. The TaiwanICDF also provides humanitarian assistance to international refugees and countries affected by natural disasters. The mission of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy is to support the democratization of Asia and the world. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) strongly condemns the Chinese communist government for defying the universal values of freedom, democracy, and sustainable development and attempting to coerce Taiwan’s organizations and companies into acceding to its political demands and sacrificing the legitimate interests of Taiwanese businesses. MOFA demands that China halt its smear campaign against the two organizations and end its efforts to sanction and suppress Taiwan’s institutions, companies, and individuals.
