A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern part of Cianjur Regency in Indonesia’s West Java Province this afternoon, leaving at least 46 people dead and hundreds injured. Numerous buildings were destroyed and roads were blocked by landslides. Indonesia has not issued a tsunami warning. Immediately after learning about the earthquake, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Jaushieh Joseph Wu asked Ambassador Wallace Minn-gan Chow, Director General of the Ministry’s Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, to call the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei (IETO Taipei) to convey sincere condolences and concern on behalf of the Taiwanese people and government regarding the casualties and damage caused by the earthquake. The IETO Taipei thanked Taiwan for its concern.
According to initial details available to the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Jakarta, no Taiwanese expatriates or nationals have been reported among the dead or injured, and TETO staff and their families are safe. The TETO in Jakarta will continue to keep track of the situation and related needs. It will pay close attention to whether any Taiwanese nationals have been affected and provide timely reports accordingly.
