A seven-member delegation from Germany’s Junge Union, led by Tom Unger, who chairs the Union’s Saxony branch, is visiting Taiwan from September 4 to 8 at the invitation of the Republic of China (Taiwan) government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its welcome of the delegation’s visit.

The trip will help the delegates gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s political and economic developments, as well as promote exchanges with their young counterparts from Taiwan’s different political parties.

The visitors will call at the Legislative Yuan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development Council, the Taipei City government, political parties, think tanks, and the German Institute Taipei. They will also visit such sites of cultural and economic interest as the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, and others.

The Junge Union was formed in 1947 as the youth branch of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union parties, which presently constitutes Germany’s ruling coalition. The Union presently boasts around 120,000 members and is Europe’s largest youth political organization. It has served as a cradle for the cultivation of many of the country’s political leaders. Numerous parliamentarians, as well as federal Minsters and heads of local government, were once leading members of the Union. (E)
