UK Conservative Party Vice-Chairman (International) Alec Shelbrooke visits Taiwan

The Hon. Alec Shelbrooke MP, Vice-Chairman (International) of the UK Conservative Party, and his wife are visiting Taiwan from March 31 to April 4 at the invitation of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan). 

The purpose of the visit is to gain insight into Taiwan’s economic and democratic development, as well as bolster bilateral interactions between Taiwan and the UK. The program encompasses meetings at the Mainland Affairs Council, National Development Council, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, as well as a luncheon hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, the visit will include exchanges with the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and the Institute of European and American Studies of Academia Sinica, together with tours of sites of cultural and economic interest such as the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101.

Mr. Shelbrooke has been a member of the House of Commons since 2010 and was appointed Vice-Chairman (International) of the Conservative Party in 2017 by Prime Minister Theresa May. He serves as a UK representative to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and is a member of the NATO Political Committee. He enjoys excellent relations with Taiwan. His visit demonstrates the importance that the UK Conservative Party attaches to advancing Taiwan-UK relations. (E)
