Susan Ennis, daughter of the late Deputy Commander Arthur Chin of the 3rd Fighter Group of the Republic of China Air Force, will visit Taiwan with her son John Gong and his wife October 25-31 at the invitation of the ROC government.

The family members will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou and participate in activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance against Japan. In addition, they will call at the ROC Air Force Academy in Kaohsiung to donate Deputy Commander Chin’s personal items related to the war, including his US Congressional Gold Medal, flight suit, leather gloves, map case, aviator goggles, and 36 maps related to Japan’s invasion of China.

To gain a better understanding of Taiwan’s traditional culture and recent political and economic developments, they will also visit other sites, including the Martyrs Shrine, Armed Forces Museum, National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, and National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei, where the Truth of the Second Sino-Japanese War exhibit is being held.

Deputy Commander Chin’s outstanding record shooting down several Japanese planes during the war earned him the nicknames “Ace pilot” and “China’s Warhawk.” On April 16, 2009, Chen Chao-min, then Minister of Defense, presented Susan Ennis a citation signed by President Ma Ying-jeou on behalf of the ROC government. The citation underscores the government’s respect for and appreciation of Deputy Commander Chin’s contributions to the war. (E)
