The Republic of China government once again calls on Japan to refrain from actions that offend the people of neighboring countries and hamper the development of positive relations in the region, following the attendance by a number of Japanese political figures at the Yasukuni Shrine’s annual autumn festival October 17-20.

At a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II on August 14, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave an apologetic and introspective speech on Japan’s history of aggression and colonial rule. The ROC government calls on other Japanese political figures to face history objectively, learn from the past, engage in deep introspection, adopt forward thinking, and assume a responsible attitude. By so doing, they can help ease the suffering of the past, promote cordial relations with nearby nations, and nurture regional and international peace and stability. (E)
