The government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) congratulate the United Kingdom on the successful completion of its general election, for all 650 seats in the House of Commons, and local elections, held on May 7.

The UK was the pioneer of modern-day democracy. The Magna Carta it issued back in 1215 defined the rights and obligations of both ruler and subjects. The UK’s long democratic tradition and the people’s respect for democracy were clearly reflected in these latest elections.

The ROC and the UK hold dear the same values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Our countries have in recent years enjoyed significant progress in bilateral cooperation and exchanges in trade, investment, culture, education, and technology, among other areas. The UK is an important trade partner to the ROC, and the second most popular destination for students from Taiwan pursuing education overseas. The ROC government hopes to continue deepening the mutually beneficial cooperation with the UK in all domains based on the existing solid foundation. (E)
