Given the continuing conflicts in the Middle East, the government and civic groups of the Republic of China (Taiwan) have worked closely over the long term with related countries and international charitable organizations to provide humanitarian aid to refugees and others affected by the turmoil.

The ROC government is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis set off by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria, Iraq, and neighboring countries. Since 2013, it has participated in a number of humanitarian aid programs in cooperation with the governments of Jordan, the Holy See, and Turkey, as well as intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UN Children’s Fund, Mercy Corps, and Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization. These programs included providing temporary housing, medical care, lighting equipment, spiritual care, water well repairs, and food supplies to refugees and others affected by conflicts in the Middle East. To date, aid from the ROC has exceeded US$7 million, with US$5.9 million spent in programs already completed and the remaining US$1.1 million invested in programs now underway.

In addition to the ROC government, Taiwan NGOs such as the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, World Vision Taiwan, and Puhsein Foundation, as well as Taiwan businesses overseas, have joined in the humanitarian effort in the spirit of empathy and generosity, providing funds and material assistance totaling more than US$1 million. Their participation has received widespread affirmation. The ROC government appreciates the humanitarian concern and active participation of Taiwan private-sector organizations and enterprises.

Extending humanitarian concern and aid is an important part of the ROC viable diplomacy policy. The government and people of the ROC embrace this goal and will continue to work closely with the world community to fulfill their international responsibilities. (E)
