Hurricane Beryl hit the Caribbean region starting on June 30, causing heavy destruction. Areas of Taiwan’s allied nations Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia were devastated. The storm damaged houses, schools, and basic infrastructure; cut off water and power supplies and communications; and wreaked havoc to people’s lives and economic activity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), through its embassies, promptly expressed the heartfelt condolences of the people and government of Taiwan to the prime ministers of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia. Out of humanitarian concerns and friendship, the government of Taiwan decided to donate US$200,000 to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and US$100,000 to Saint Lucia to support government rescue and relief efforts so that life would return to normal for people as early as possible.

Promptly after the disaster, the Republic of China (Taiwan) embassies in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia engaged in close communication with overseas compatriots, businesspeople, and technical mission staff members from Taiwan, who are all currently safe. MOFA will continue to closely monitor related developments and provide necessary assistance. (E)
