The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) deeply regrets that the Republic of Nauru has accepted the People’s Republic of China’s false narrative concerning the so-called “one China principle” in the joint communiqué signed on January 24 on the resumption of Nauru-PRC diplomatic relations. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) government also strongly condemns China’s government for attempting to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty and suppress its diplomatic space.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs solemnly reiterates that the misleading “one China principle” disseminated by China’s government has no basis in fact. The aforementioned joint communiqué in no way changes the sovereign status of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Taiwan’s democratic achievements, evidenced by the smooth completion of its recent presidential election, have proven to the world that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) government will not yield to China’s malicious suppression. China’s actions only strengthen Taiwan’s determination to defend the free and democratic way of life enjoyed by its people.
Furthermore, MOFA expresses great disappointment and regret that the Nauruan government, succumbing to economic enticements, has deferred to China’s machinations and disregarded the many years of developmental assistance and friendship extended by Taiwan.
MOFA urges the international community to work together in countering China’s despicable attempts aimed at changing the status quo across the Taiwan Strait of neither side being subordinate to the other, as well as to jointly resist the open challenge posed by authoritarianism to democratic values. MOFA calls on all countries to continue to support democratic Taiwan and jointly safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. (E)
