Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Mrs. Wu hosted a dinner on October 9 for Dame Marcella Althea Liburd, Governor-General of Saint Christopher and Nevis, and Dame Susan Dilys Dougan, Governor-General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, who were leading their respective delegations on a visit to Taiwan. Minister Wu thanked the two nations for their continuing support of Taiwan’s international participation.

Minister Wu expressed gratitude for the two countries’ long-standing and staunch backing for Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations, World Health Organization, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, International Civil Aviation Organization, and International Criminal Police Organization. This year, Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of Saint Christopher and Nevis, and Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, again delivered strong statements of support during the General Debate at the UN General Assembly, showing that the two countries, both diplomatic allies of Taiwan, stand firmly behind Taiwan in the international arena.

Minister Wu pointed out that Taiwan enjoyed robust and cordial ties with both countries. Explaining that Taiwan had worked closely with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Christopher and Nevis over the past 40 years on medicine, education, women’s empowerment, climate resilience, and sustainable development, Minister Wu stated that many fruitful outcomes had been achieved. He added that Taiwan would continue to deepen its cooperative relationship with the two countries over a broad range of areas and work with them in the international arena to defend the shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Governors-General Liburd and Dougan then thanked the government of Taiwan for its warm welcome and wished the nation a happy 112th National Day. They recognized the many cooperative projects that had benefited their countries and peoples. Governor-General Liburd noted that Taiwan was the first nation to establish diplomatic ties with Saint Christopher and Nevis upon the latter’s independence. This year, she said, was particularly meaningful to Taiwan and Saint Christopher and Nevis, as the two countries were marking 40 years of diplomatic ties.

Governor-General Liburd arrived in Taiwan on October 9 and is to depart on October 13. Governor-General Dougan arrived on October 7 and is set to depart on October 11.
