Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala Mario Adolfo Búcaro on the morning of October 2. The two officials exchanged views on issues such as deepening bilateral relations and mutual cooperation.

Minister Wu welcomed Minister Búcaro on his visiting Taiwan once again, asking him to convey the heartfelt appreciation of the people and government of Taiwan to Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei Falla, who voiced strong support for Taiwan and staunchly endorsed Taiwan’s international participation during this year’s United Nations General Assembly. Minister Wu stated that Taiwan and Guatemala share an enduring partnership and that their governments and peoples enjoy close interactions. This has demonstrated that ties between the two countries are robust. When President Tsai Ing-wen visited Guatemala earlier this year, she toured the National Hospital of Chimaltenango. Built with Taiwan’s assistance, the hospital represents Taiwan’s goodwill in aiding the Guatemalan people and is a source of pride for the people and government of Taiwan. Taiwan will continue to support efforts by Guatemala to spur national development and enhance the people’s welfare.

Minister Búcaro stated that he had been asked by President Giammattei to extend warm regards to President Tsai and to thank Taiwan for supporting Guatemala’s key national development policies. He noted that the Guatemalan government has spared no effort in consistently advancing bilateral relations and that he looks forward to Taiwanese businesses expanding investment in Guatemala. He also hoped to open up markets for Guatemalan products through the Central America Trade Office, thereby strengthening interactions and linkages between the two countries. Minister Búcaro stressed that Taiwan government scholarships and training programs have helped Guatemala nurture highly educated talent over the years, laying an excellent foundation for national development.

While in Taiwan, Minister Búcaro is attending the E-Learning Executive Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific and Latin American Studies at Tamkang University to uphold in a concrete manner his ideal for advancing diplomatic personnel exchanges between Taiwan and Guatemala and to increase his understanding of Taiwan’s development in the areas of culture, economy, trade, and technology.
