Torrential rain in Haiti over the past few days has led to severe flooding across the country. The Northwest Department and the southern regions have been hit particularly hard, as has the capital city of Port-au-Prince. To date, 42 people have died, 85 have been injured, 11 are missing, and 13,633 homes have been flooded. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said on Twitter that the government continues to closely monitor the situation and work with international organizations on emergency response measures.
In recent years, Haiti has been struck by a number of natural disasters, including earthquakes and tropical storms. The Republic of China (Taiwan) has spared no effort in assisting Haiti with postdisaster reconstruction. In response to the current flooding, the Taiwan government immediately allocated US$100,000 for disaster relief on the basis of humanitarian concerns and the staunch diplomatic partnership between the two countries. Taiwan also instructed its embassy in Haiti to coordinate disaster relief with the Haitian government so that local people’s lives can soon return to normal.
The embassy in Haiti maintains close contact with Taiwanese businesspeople, overseas compatriots, and technical missions. No Taiwanese nationals have been reported missing or injured. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to closely follow developments in Haiti. (E)
