Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Tah-ray Yui summoned Honduran Ambassador to Taiwan Harold Burgos to a meeting at 11 a.m. on March 15 to express grave concern over President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento’s announcement on Twitter that Honduras will develop official relations with China.

Vice Minister Yui reiterated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Honduras have been diplomatic allies for more than 80 years and that Taiwan has worked with the Honduran government over the years to promote many cooperation projects that have benefited the peoples of both countries. He also stated that Taiwan is a sincere and reliable ally of Honduras. The government and people of Taiwan have long assisted Honduras with its national development to the best of their abilities and extended a helping hand in times of Honduras’s greatest need. By contrast, the true purpose behind ostentatious commitments made by China’s dictatorial regime is to poach Taiwan’s diplomatic allies and suppress Taiwan’s international space. Taiwan reminds Honduras to carefully consider the matter so as not to fall into China’s snare and make a flawed decision that will undermine its many years of bilateral friendship with Taiwan.
