Minister without Portfolio of the Republic of China (Taiwan) John C. C. Deng held a videoconference with Canadian Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Mary Ng on February 7. Both sides recognized the successful outcomes of the exploratory discussions begun last year on a foreign investment promotion and protection arrangement (FIPA) between Taiwan and Canada. They also jointly announced that formal bilateral FIPA negotiations would commence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomes the announcement.

In its Indo-Pacific Strategy issued last November, Canada stated that it would promote multifaceted engagement with Taiwan, as well enhancing bilateral economic and trade ties. The progress made toward a Taiwan-Canada FIPA will contribute to a deeper Indo-Pacific partnership between the two countries. MOFA will continue to actively coordinate with the Executive Yuan Office of Trade Negotiations and related ministries to conclude FIPA talks as early as possible. A FIPA would further bilateral investment and trade, establish more resilient supply chains in the postpandemic era, jointly support the rules-based international economic and trade order, and advance peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
