MOFA response to election of Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as new US House Speaker

The US House of Representatives elected Republican Party leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker at one o’clock in the morning of January 7, eastern time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) sincerely congratulates Speaker McCarthy and looks forward to working closely with the House of Representatives under his leadership on further deepening friendly Taiwan-US ties.

Taiwan and the United States share the core values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Thanks to the joint efforts of both sides in recent years, Taiwan-US relations have reached new heights across areas including politics, security, economics, and trade. The support of the US Congress has long been a bedrock of the Taiwan-US partnership. With the convening of the 118th US Congress, MOFA looks forward to continuing to work with Speaker McCarthy, a long-term supporter of Taiwan, and other friends from both sides of the political aisle to actively strengthen cordial bilateral ties and jointly promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
