Former President of the Republic of the Philippines Fidel V. Ramos passed away on July 31 at the age of 94. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses deep condolences on his passing and has requested the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines to convey heartfelt sympathies to the Philippine government and former President Ramos’s family on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.

Former President Ramos had a remarkable political career. During his tenure as the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998, he successfully promoted economic reforms, championed social stability, and heightened his nation’s democratic development. As the son of a Philippine Ambassador to the R.O.C., he lived in Taiwan during his youth and developed a robust friendship with Taiwan. He visited Taiwan several times after stepping down from office, showing long-term concern for Taiwan’s security and economy and supporting official and people-to-people cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and the Philippines.

In honoring the memory of former President Ramos, MOFA looks forward to further enhancing the well-being of the Taiwanese and the Philippine people through the continued advancement of substantive bilateral cooperation in such fields as economics and trade, agriculture and fisheries, science and technology, culture, and tourism.
