The Halifax International Security Forum (HFX) announced that President Tsai Ing-wen has been awarded the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service

On May 3, 2021, the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX) announced through a video on Twitter that President Tsai Ing-wen has been awarded the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service. The announcement stated that, despite China’s growing military threat against Taiwan, President Tsai has steadfastly defended the values of freedom and democracy and earned the international community’s respect and recognition. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the HFX’s decision and is profoundly grateful for the support shown by Taiwan’s friends worldwide. MOFA will coordinate with the HFX on the time and arrangements for President Tsai to receive the prize.

The John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service was established to commemorate the late US Senator for his unwavering commitment to the values of liberty, equality, opportunity, and democracy. This honor further affirms the efforts of President Tsai and the 23.5 million people of Taiwan in containing the pandemic and safeguarding democracy.
