Taiwan and US hold videoconference on Taiwan’s international participation; MOFA expresses sincere gratitude for staunch US support

Taiwan and the United States held a videoconference on March 30, 2021, to discuss Taiwan’s international participation. Both sides shared strategies and methods for strengthening and expanding Taiwan’s participation in international organizations addressing global public health, transnational crime, civil aviation, and climate change, as well as others promoting shared values and interests. This meeting marked the first in-depth talks on bilateral cooperation to enhance Taiwan’s participation in international organizations since the Biden administration assumed office. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) thanks the United States for its unwavering support and commitment to Taiwan’s international participation.

 

During the meeting, the United States recognized Taiwan as an excellent partner for multilateral cooperation in the international community and lauded Taiwan’s successful prevention and containment of COVID-19. The United States also reiterated its continued support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and its desire for closer cooperation. MOFA Secretary General Lily L. W. Hsu delivered a speech and expressed deep gratitude to the United States for its steadfast friendship and substantive support. MOFA will continue to work closely with the United States and other like-minded countries to actively expand Taiwan’s international presence in accordance with the principles of professionalism, pragmatism, and making contributions. This will allow Taiwan to more actively contribute to the global multilateral system. 

 

Videoconference participants from Taiwan included MOFA Secretary General Hsu and Taiwan’s Deputy Representative to the United States Wang Liang-yu, along with their teams in Taipei and Washington, DC. US participants included Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Ambassador Erica Barks-Ruggles, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Jonathan Fritz, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Nerissa J. Cook, and Director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT/T) Brent Christensen. (E)
