The government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) extend their congratulations to the United Kingdom on the successful completion of its June 8 general election, which saw the election of members of parliament for all 650 seats in the House of Commons.

The United Kingdom was a pioneer in the development of modern forms of democracy, and its time-honored democratic traditions and the sophisticated democratic literacy of its citizens were evident for all to see during this most recent election, exemplifying the nation’s standing as a global model of democracy.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) and the United Kingdom share such common values as democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law. Bilateral relations have matured rapidly in recent years, as evidenced by frequent mutual visits by high-ranking officials and parliamentarians, and increasingly close exchanges in such areas as economics and trade, business, tourism, culture, education, scientific research and personnel. In addition, the UK has long offered staunch support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in and contributions to international organizations. Building upon these grounds, the ROC government hopes to sustain and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with the United Kingdom in a wider range of areas going forward. (E)
