UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson signed a strategic partnership in Sweden on October 13, in which both parties agreed to jointly respond to the systemic challenges posed by China and reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) warmly welcomes the declaration and highly commends its partners in the international democratic community for underlining their support for cross-strait security.

In the partnership agreement, the United Kingdom and Sweden reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties to tackle global challenges, including Russia’s malign influence and disinformation campaigns as well as the systemic challenges posed by China. Recognizing that the prosperity and security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific are inextricably linked, both countries pledged to bolster partnerships between the regions, including through the implementation of the EU and UK Indo-Pacific strategies.

Prime Minister Sunak and Prime Minister Kristersson have publicly highlighted the importance of cross-strait peace and stability on numerous occasions this year. Following the joint statement by the leaders in London on June 19, this is yet another expression of concern over the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. MOFA will continue to deepen cooperation with democratic partners in the international community, including the United Kingdom and Sweden, to jointly maintain cross-strait peace, strengthen democratic resilience and solidarity, and uphold the security of the Indo-Pacific region.
