Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with a Republic of Nauru delegation led by President Russ Joseph Kun and Mrs. Kun at the Taipei Guest House on the afternoon of November 15. Immediately following the meeting, Minister Wu and President Kun signed a joint communiqué on the reaffirmation of diplomatic relations between the two countries, pledging to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, coast guard affairs, port management, police affairs, ICT, vocational training, climate change, and women’s empowerment. The signing underscored the robust and cordial diplomatic alliance between Taiwan and Nauru.
After the signing ceremony, Minister and Mrs. Wu hosted a dinner for President and Mrs. Kun and members of the visiting delegation to convey the government’s warm welcome. In his remarks, Minister Wu welcomed President Kun’s leading a delegation of key cabinet members on a visit to Taiwan so soon after taking office. He thanked Nauru for expressing staunch support for Taiwan in the international arena over the years, including at the United Nations, the World Health Assembly, the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the International Civil Aviation Organization. Minister Wu also stated that the people and government of Taiwan deeply appreciated Nauru’s support and will continue to enhance bilateral cooperation based on the existing solid partnership.
President Kun thanked the Taiwan government for its warm hospitality and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening bilateral ties. He also recognized the Taiwan government’s long-standing support of Nauru’s development of basic infrastructure. He noted that related initiatives—such as a solar energy generating system, multifunctional patrol vessels donated by Taiwan, a digital opportunity center, and human resource training—had all produced significant outcomes for Nauru’s development. President Kun also stated that Taiwan’s generous donations of antipandemic supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic were crucial to Nauru’s successful fight against the disease and the nation’s economic recovery. He pledged that Nauru would continue to stand with Taiwan to realize the theme of his visit—“Sustainable partnership: connectivity for prosperity.”
Also attending the dinner were representatives of Taiwan International Ports Corp., Ltd., Taichung Veterans General Hospital, International Cooperation and Development Fund, National Pingtung University, and Ming Chuan University. Amid a warm and friendly atmosphere, participants exchanged views on a wide range of domains covering public health, medicine, education, vocational training, technical cooperation in agriculture and fisheries, port affairs, and coast guard affairs.
