Since October 10, Russia has launched missiles indiscriminately at nonmilitary targets in major cities across Ukraine, including the capital of Kyiv, and attempted to destroy energy infrastructure. This has caused massive devastation and heavy casualties among innocent civilians. The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) strongly condemns Russia for violating the principle of the peaceful settlement of disputes set forth in the UN Charter and for committing acts of violence that constitute crimes of war and aggression under the Rome Statute.
The government of Taiwan extends heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Ukrainian families who have lost loved ones during Russia’s unprovoked attacks. These brutal and inhumane strikes by Russia’s armed forces expose to the world the malevolent nature of the authoritarian Russian government, which has engaged in forceful illegal expansion, aggressive trampling of another nation’s territory, and wanton abuse of human rights. Taiwan continues to resolutely stand with the democratic community in unanimously opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and pledges to jointly safeguard the rules-based international order and thereby ensure global peace and stability.
The government of Taiwan solemnly urges Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity and calls for peaceful and rational dialogue to quickly reconcile differences. Taiwan will continue to fulfil its responsibilities as a member of the international community and work with like-minded countries to enhance cooperation, adopt necessary countermeasures, and assist Ukraine in defending its territory and restoring a peaceful life to its people as soon as possible.
