MOFA response to North Korea’s launch of a short-range ballistic missile
September 25, 2022
On the morning of September 25, North Korea test-fired a short-range ballistic missile from Pyeonganbuk-do toward the Sea of Japan. The governments of the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea have condemned North Korea for again violating related resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and taking such a provocative step.
Since January 2022, North Korea has carried out 22 missile tests near the Korean Peninsula, including tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles, heedless of the expectations of peace-loving countries in the region. On September 8, North Korea announced its policy concerning nuclear weapons, stating that it would not rule out a preemptive strike under certain conditions. This further escalated regional tensions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is greatly concerned by and strongly condemns North Korea’s irresponsible actions, which contravene Security Council prohibitions and undermine regional peace and stability.
The government of Taiwan is paying close attention to North Korea’s provocative actions, including its frequent missile tests and changes to its nuclear policy, and their potential impact on the regional situation. As an important member of the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan is willing to work with the international community on related measures and cooperate with like-minded countries to ensure regional peace and security, including on the Korean Peninsula, oppose the expansionist strategy of authoritarian powers, defend the rules-based international order, and safeguard a free and open Indo-Pacific.
