The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely congratulates President Emmanuel Macron of the French Republic on his reelection to a second term in office following his win in the second round of the presidential elections on April 24.
According to election results announced by the French Ministry of the Interior, President Macron, the candidate for La République en Marche, was reelected to a second term in office. With the French people having chosen their national leader through a smooth and democratic balloting process that reflected the public will, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) promptly instructed its Representative Office in France to convey the heartfelt congratulations of the R.O.C. (Taiwan) government to the government and people of France, including President Macron.
Taiwan and France share such core values as freedom, democracy, and human rights. In recent years, under the leadership of President Macron, bilateral relations have continued to deepen and exchanges have been enhanced in all domains. The two nations have engaged in dialogue on key issues; Taiwan established a new office in Aix-en-Provence, a technological and cultural hub in southern France; and in 2022, France included Taiwan for the first time in its Indo-Pacific strategy report. In addition, in statements issued by the Group of Seven and at the France-Australia Foreign and Defense (2+2) Ministerial Consultations and the France-Japan Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Meeting, the French administration has consistently and explicitly affirmed its high regard for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. In 2021, the French Senate and National Assembly each adopted resolutions backing Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. They have also shown for the first time their staunch support by dispatching important delegations to Taiwan. Furthermore, Taiwan’s Representative to France, François Chih-chung Wu, has been invited to attend multiple hearings held by the two houses of the French Parliament. All of these developments bear testimony to the increasingly close and cordial relations between Taiwan and France.
Taiwan and France are like-minded democratic partners and MOFA eagerly anticipates the continued strengthening of bilateral ties under President Macron’s leadership. In the spirit of mutual assistance for mutual benefit, Taiwan looks forward to working with France to further the prosperous development of bilateral relations, safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the Indo-Pacific, and ensure the rules-based international democratic order.
