The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) extends deep condolences on the passing of former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on March 23 at the age of 84. It has instructed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) to convey heartfelt sympathy to the Albright family on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.

Secretary Albright was greatly respected in US political circles. During the Clinton administration, she served as US Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Secretary of State, becoming the first woman to assume the latter position. After leaving government service, Secretary Albright chaired the National Democratic Institute and continued to speak out for democracy.

She also maintained friendly ties with TECRO and was supportive of Taiwan, stating during testimony before the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs on February 27, 2019, that the US should uphold the Taiwan Relations Act.

MOFA deeply regrets the passing of former Secretary Albright and expresses the utmost respect and gratitude for her contributions to democracy, peace, and human rights worldwide.
