No. 289

In consideration of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in particular the rapid rise in cases in Africa recently due to the Omicron variant, Taiwan will donate 150,000 doses of the Taiwan-made Medigen vaccine to the Republic of Somaliland. This concrete measure aims to assist Somaliland, which is friendly to Taiwan, in dealing with the threat posed by the pandemic and prevent the further spread of the virus. Chargé d’Affaires of the Taiwan Representative Office in Somaliland Wu Chen-chi and Somaliland Health Minister Hassan Mohamed Ali Gafadhi jointly signed an agreement on December 27 to facilitate this donation.

The Somaliland Health Ministry has already issued an emergency use authorization for the Medigen vaccine in accordance with its domestic health laws and policy.

Taiwan continues to show concern for global public health and pandemic prevention, and it is willing to work with the international community to solve key public health issues. In the spirit of “health for all, Taiwan can help,” Taiwan will continue to assist friendly countries and the international community in strengthening mechanisms to fight the pandemic and deepening related cooperation.
