The working holiday arrangement between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg―signed on August 21, 2018―officially entered into force on January 1, 2019, after the governments of both countries completed relevant internal procedures.

According to the arrangement, each year Taiwan and Luxembourg will allow up to 40 young people between the ages of 18 and 30 from the other country to enter their territory for working holidays. Taiwanese youth going to Luxembourg can apply for a working holiday visa that allows for stays of up to one year, while young people from Luxembourg coming to Taiwan can apply for a 180-day visa that can be extended for a maximum of another 180 days. Through the arrangement, participants can travel for tourism, pursue temporary employment or short-term, self-funded education, allowing them to learn new languages and gain deeper insight into the culture, customs, way of life, and social fabric of the host country. This will enhance mutual understanding and friendship between Taiwan and Luxembourg.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has posted a Chinese-language version of information provided by the government of Luxembourg on application requirements and other important items regarding its working holiday scheme on the following website: http://www.youthtaiwan.net. Young Taiwanese interested in traveling to Luxembourg for a working holiday can also visit the website of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Office in Taipei (http://www.investinluxembourg.tw) to learn more about application procedures. Luxembourg youth who intend to come to Taiwan for a working holiday can find relevant information on the website of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium (http://www.taiwanembassy.org/be).

Luxembourg is the 11th nation in Europe to sign a working holiday program with Taiwan―following Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom―and the 16th worldwide. The five countries outside Europe are Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea and New Zealand.

MOFA advises Taiwanese youth visiting Luxembourg under the working holiday program to collect relevant information and learn more about the country prior to departure, abide by local laws and regulations, take standard safety precautions, and stay in frequent contact with their family in Taiwan, so as to ensure a safe and pleasant trip. In case of emergency, they can contact the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium (Address: Square de Meeus 27, 1000 Brussels, Belgium; Phone: +32-2-287-2800 or +32-(0)475-472-515; Email: bel@mofa.gov.tw; Office hours: Monday-Friday 09:00-12:30 and 13:30-17:30).(E)
