The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is donating US$800,000 to help local governments and flood victims in the US states of Texas and Louisiana with rescue and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Harvey, so that people can resume their lives as soon as possible. The storm has wreaked havoc since making landfall on August 25.
Ties between the United States and Taiwan are close, as is the friendship between our peoples. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons at this time of year, and empathizes with those who have lost loved ones and homes. President Tsai Ing-wen expressed concern for the victims on her official Twitter account on August 28, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its representative office in Washington, DC, have also done so separately on behalf of the ROC government.
Taiwan’s representative offices in Washington, DC, and Houston will liaise with the relevant US agencies to work out an appropriate time to hold the donation ceremony, and get the funds to victims so that they can rebuild their homes as quickly as possible. (E)
